To all IP1 Parents……
Hello, and welcome to the Cole Harbour Bel-Ayr Minor Hockey Association! For those of you I have not yet met, My Name is Jim Bungay and I am the IP/Novice coordinator for our association. Sometimes when somebody offers you advice, it can come across as condescending - like that one person that seems to know more than you do! That is certainly not my goal. Even though I grew up playing hockey, I wish that somebody had relayed their experiences to me, before my child’s first day – Just so I knew what to expect. At risk of sounding like some sort of authority figure, I am going to relay our story to all of the new Hockey Parents…

Hello all and welcome to the Cole Harbour Bel-Ayr Minor Hockey Association. If you are new to this sport or this association I am confident that you are going to find our program a valuable tool in the upbringing of your child. Most importantly, and I am sure your son or daughter are going to learn and have a lot of fun.
For those of you I have not met, my name is Jim Bungay, and I am the IP / Novice Coordinator. I will be having a parents meeting in the coming weeks to outline the program, address your questions and concerns as well as solicit volunteers to be mangers, fundraising coordinators, 50/50 coordinators and on-ice volunteers. For the first few weeks, I have assembled a group of coaches that will start off your program in the right direction. They will handle the evaluations and on-ice activities for the first few weeks. However, if you are interested in helping on-ice (and I strongly encourage parents to become involved) please bring your skates, helmet and gloves and stick to the ice sessions, and feel free to go on the ice with your son / daughter. During our parents meeting I will outline the requirements for our “on-ice volunteers”. Once your program is up and running, it will be these volunteers that will ensure the success – so please get involved!!
If you have not visited the website, please have a look at the schedule to see what ice sessions you should bring your son / daughter too. http://chbawings.org/files/2010_IP_NOVICE_Evaluations.pdf.
I hope to meet all of you over the coming weeks, however in the interim, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
Cheers – and Welcome
Jim Bungay

We at CHBAMHA are committed to the success of the female Hockey program. This year we have many new directions that we are taking our IP and Novice programs in to ensure, among other things, that we are “Female Friendly." Our expectation is that within the next week or so (pending our registration numbers), we will be able to announce our first “all female” IP group and our first “all female” Novice team. With the support of our community’s parents, we hope that this year will form the building blocks for a future of successful female hockey in Cole Harbour. If you or somebody you know is considering hockey for your female IP or Novice aged player, please do not hesitate to contact Jim Bungay at

The Initiation Program (Timbits) and Novice Program are broken down primarily by age (birthday as of December 31st 2009).
Kids 5 and 6 years of age take part in IP 1 or IP 2. Both programs are very similar, IP2 being a continuation of the learning curve. Both IP 1 and IP 2 kids practice twice a week (usually weekends) and go on the ice as a group. The kids work for most of the practice at different stations developing their skills. These groups will not be playing a game for the whole practice during the year but do get a chance to go to jamborees throughout the year.
The Novice kids are 7 and 8 year olds. They are placed on teams of usually 17 players. There are 3 levels of Novice: Advanced, Intermediate, and Development. There is normally: 1 Advance team, 2 Intermediate teams, and 3 Development teams. These numbers depend on the number of kids that register and could change from year to year. These kids also have 2 hours of practice ice per week (again usually on weekends) and two teams share the ice for each practice. The first part of the year is spent solely on development, with games being introduced partway through the season. Novice teams attend jamborees as well.
At the start of the year there are player evaluations and conditioning camp (Novice level only) times that will be posted on the website. The evaluation times are included in registration but there is an additional fee for the conditioning camp. You must include the conditioning camp in your registration if you wish to participate. It is very important to attend the evaluation session (the free one) as this gives a group of 6-10 evaluators a chance to look at the kids. Once the on ice sessions are finished, the evaluators discuss them and the kids are assigned to teams. Coaches will then call the players that are on their team. This process takes a few days.
The Novice Advance and Intermediate teams have full time goaltenders. Development teams will rotate the goaltenders from week to week as long as there are different kids that want to play the position. If possible, all teams will dress 2 goalies. Equipment can be provided by the Association but there is a limited amount that can be signed out.
If you wish to coach or help out on the ice you will have to take a minimum of 2 courses and fill out a Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry form.
Ice times will probably be a little erratic for the first couple of weeks, so be sure to check the website often. It will smooth out somewhat but you should check the ice schedules frequently.
The objective of Timbit and Novice hockey is for the kids to have fun, be active, and develop their skating and hockey skills. If you should have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the Timbit/Novice Coordinator.
